Questions About Basketball

Q. What is a 2 for 1?

A.  A 2 for 1 is when there is roughly 30-40 seconds left in the game.  This allows the team with the ball to try for a basket while also giving the ball back to the opposing team with more time on the game clock than there is on the shot clock.  This would mean the second team must shoot the ball before the game clock runs out, thus allowing the first team to get the ball back to try another shot before time runs out.

Q.  What is a clear path foul?

A.  If a fast break starts in a team’s backcourt and a defender fouls any offensive player when the team is going to score an easy basket, a clear path foul has occurred. When the foul happens, no defender can be ahead of the ball where he could defend against the easy basket.

Q.  What is the difference between a restricted and a nonrestricted free agent?

A.  An unrestricted free agent may sign with any team he chooses.   A restricted free agent's original team has the opportunity to keep the player by matching any offers submitted by other teams. This is also known as the "right of first refusal."

Q.  What is the difference between a flagrant 1 and a flagrant 2 foul?

A.  A flagrant 1 is a foul that involves unnecessary contact by a player.  A flagrant 2 is a foul that includes unnecessary and excessive contact by a player.  It is considered an unsportsmanlike act and the player is ejected immediately.
